Fall 4 days Visitors planning a fall foliage trip to the Smoky Mountains
Pigeon Forge Fall Foliage Itinerary: 4 Days in October
October in the Smoky Mountains is genuinely spectacular — peak fall foliage hits mid-to-late October at lower elevations, Dollywood's Harvest Festival is in full swing, and the mountain air is crisp and perfect for hiking. This 4-day itinerary is built to capture the best of all of it: foliage drives, elevation hikes for the most dramatic color, Dollywood at its best, and the specific Smokies overlooks that are worth the drive in autumn.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival + Cades Cove Fall Drive
Morning
Arrive and check into your fall foliage cabin — a mountain view with a private deck is essential for watching the color change. Book 3-6 months ahead for October; the best properties go fast.
October cabins in Pigeon Forge are the most in-demand of the year. Book early and confirm mountain view in writing.
Afternoon
Drive Cades Cove loop (11 miles, one-way) in the national park — one of the most beautiful fall drives in the entire eastern US. The open valley surrounded by fall-colored ridges is extraordinary. Look for deer, bear, and wild turkey in the meadows.
Cades Cove loop road is open for vehicles Monday, Tuesday, and from Wednesday noon through Sunday. Check the NPS schedule before planning this drive. Mid-afternoon on a weekday is the best time for wildlife activity and manageable traffic.
Evening
Return to Pigeon Forge for dinner and an easy first evening. Hatfield and McCoy Dinner Show is a good arrival-night choice — pre-book well in advance for October.
October dinner shows sell out weeks in advance. Book before your trip, not when you arrive.
Day 2: Dollywood Harvest Festival
Morning
Dollywood
Dollywood opens in full Harvest Festival mode throughout October — artisan demonstrations, Dollywood's pumpkin display, fall-themed food, and the full ride lineup. Arrive at opening and ride Lightning Rod first.
The Harvest Festival adds craft demonstrations, live bluegrass and gospel performances, and seasonal food throughout October. The fall theming makes Dollywood feel even more like an Appalachian heritage experience than usual.
Afternoon
After the major coasters, explore the Harvest Festival artisan demonstrations in Craftsman's Valley. The Grist Mill cinnamon bread with fall-spiced apple butter is the seasonal version worth trying. Celebrity Theater performances are at their best during Harvest Festival.
Check the Dollywood app for special Harvest Festival events and performers — there are often headliner acts in the Celebrity Theater during October weekends.
Evening
Dinner inside Dollywood at Aunt Granny's buffet, then head back to the cabin for a hot tub evening with fall color views if your deck overlooks the ridge.
A mountain-view cabin deck in October at dusk — with color in the ridges and cool air — is genuinely one of the best Smoky Mountain experiences. Don't skip this.
Day 3: Peak Foliage Drives + Overlooks
Morning
Early drive to Newfound Gap Road — the main scenic corridor through the national park. Drive from the Sugarlands Visitor Center to Newfound Gap (17 miles) with stops at every overlook. The color is typically at peak intensity at mid-elevation (3,000-4,500 feet) in mid-October.
Start this drive before 9am to get the best light and avoid the worst of the October traffic. Download the NPS Smokies app for real-time road conditions before leaving.
Afternoon
Clingmans Dome drive (7 miles off Newfound Gap Road, road open through October 31) — at 6,643 feet, the trees are often bare or near-bare here, but the views of the fall color carpet below are extraordinary. The 0.5-mile ramp to the observation tower is steep but worth it.
Clingmans Dome road closes November 1 annually. If your trip is late October, this may be your last chance for the season.
Evening
Anakeesta in Gatlinburg at golden hour — the AnaVista Tower views over the fall-colored Smoky Mountains at sunset are among the best views in the entire eastern US in October. Time your arrival for 5-6pm.
October sunset at Anakeesta is absolutely worth the entry cost. The fall foliage stretching across the mountain ridges in all directions from the tower is a genuinely breathtaking view.
Day 4: Fall Hike + Departure
Morning
Alum Cave Trail for the best fall foliage hiking in the Smokies — the 4.4-mile roundtrip trail passes through several distinct forest zones with peak color at different elevations. The overhanging bluff section is stunning with fall color surrounding the cliff face.
Start the Alum Cave hike before 8am on October weekends — the trailhead parking fills by 9am. This is one of the most popular hikes in the park; weekday visits are significantly less crowded.
Afternoon
Post-hike lunch in Gatlinburg, then a final browse of the Gatlinburg Arts and Crafts Community for fall-themed local artisan work. Check out of the cabin and begin the drive home.
Sunday afternoon departure from Pigeon Forge in October will encounter significant outbound traffic. Leave by 2pm or plan to stay through Sunday evening for a Monday morning departure to avoid the worst congestion.
Evening
Final Pigeon Forge evening or begin the drive home. If staying the night, the Island fountain show is a lovely low-key finale.
If driving home Sunday, check traffic conditions on I-40 before departing — the Pigeon Forge outbound and I-40 corridor get very congested Sunday evenings in October.
